Samurai Sipper

Message on a Bottle

By S.S. FAIR

Published: October 8, 2006

"I’d been running on random for a week, and happily the endgame turned out to be Mollydooker, from Zachys. “Mollydooker” is Australian slang for “left-hander”; the Samurai Shopper was charmed by the old-fashioned cartoon flummery of Mollydooker’s the Maître D’ — more Max Fleischer, the creator of Betty Boop, than Max Ernst. This McLaren Vale cabernet from 2005 was a tsunami of fruit, texture and finish. Like most Aussie reds, the Maître D’ lands all its punches in the first round. Mollydooker’s 2005 shiraz-blended Two Left Feet was another wordless wow, with its immoderate 15 percent alcohol and heady spices. Produced by Sarah and Sparky Marquis — of course — Mollydooker’s perforated back labels tear off neatly for filing under Must Buy Case When I’m Upright. "
